What is Male Menopause? Treaments for Male Menopause

.

Does male menopause exists and how do you know if you are in it?
Male menopause symptoms include many of the same symptoms women
experience including weight gain, memory and mood changes, as well as some that are more specific to men.
There is some controversy in the medical community as to whether there is a male menopause and should it be treated. Some men object to the term “male menopause” because it has been used in a derogatory way, in much the same way as “female menopause”. Some have used the term to mean impotence. Recently doctors have used the term andropause, viropause and testepause instead.
Studies are showing that men are much like women in that some breeze through the midlife changes without much problem, while some need a little more help. The main difference between the genders is that women’s hormones need to drop enough for them to become infertile, while men can remain fertile their entire lives. This can lead to a more drastic and quicker drop in hormones for women, and can create greater or more obvious symptoms. However, this does not mean that some men don’t suffer sypmptoms and health problems at mid-life and that they should not be addressed.
Some Symptoms of Male Menopause:
• Irritability
• Mood swings or depression
• Insomnia, or not sleeping through the night
• Decreased libido
• ED or impotence
• memory problems
• Lethargy
• Weakness
• Loss of lean body
• Loss of bone mass
• Sometimes even hot flashes
What is Male Menopause?
A male’s production of testosterone (the male sex hormone) slowly diminishes after a man reaches the age of 40. For most men the drop in testosterone is gradual (about 1% per year) rather than precipitous as is the hormone drop experienced by women going through menopause, but some men have more of a drop than others. Some men also experience more symptoms as their hormone levels drop. Testosterone is responsible for the sex drive, therefore declining testosterone levels can cause a decrease in sex drive. Studies show more than half of normal, healthy men after the age of 40 experience some degree of impotence or difficulty maintaining an erection. If a man is over the age of 50 and is having significant problems with sexual desire or performance, he should have his hormone levels tested by his doctor to determine if they are lower than they should be. Erection problems can also indicate cardiovascular disease and should not be ignored by men. Testosterone levels that are too low can cause a man to lose muscle mass and bone density. They may also notice less energy, memory problems, irritability and an increase in abdominal fat.

Testosterone replacement therapy is available for men and needs to be administered and monitored by a medical doctor. There have been many safety concerns with testosterone replacement and men need to research whether the risks outweigh the benefits with their doctors. Bioidentical hormones are hormones that come from plant sources and are made to be identical to the hormones of the human body. These hormones have become a popular alternative for women in menopause and are believed to be much safer with fewer side effects because they are identical to your body’s own hormones. Hormone testing can tell your doctor exactly what your hormone needs are so you replace only what you need. Bioidentical hormones are also available for men. This is an option for men who have significant symptoms and health issues as they age.
